A pomegranite can be some what messy to open and eat. The exterior skin of the fruit is hard and leathery and protects the very tasty interior content. The inside of the
fruit contains the seeds or arils as they are properly called. The seeds are surrounded and protected by a white membrane and pulp. If you open the fruit wrong you can end up getting yourself and your clothes covered with the seeds and juice.
This red fruit is similar in shape to a large orange and roughly the same size. At one end of the fruit is a crown shaped hat. Here is how to properly open the fruit to get at the seeds:
- The first thing you should do is cut off the crown piece of the fruit and throw it away.
- Cut lines into the external skin at different places around the outside. Make sure not to cut the whole way into the fruit.
- The next thing is to place the pomegranite upside down in a bowl of cold water to soak. You can let the fruit soak for 5-10 minutes depending on how big it is.
- Now lift the fruit slightly up out of the water and try gently to pull the external skin apart. This should be easy enough as you have already placed cut in the skin.
- When breaking the fruit apart the seeds should sink to the bottom of the bowl.
- Now with the skin of the fruit in pieces you can rub the rest of the seeds from the membrane and let them drop into the bowl of water. You can now throw the skin away.
- Next you can get a sieve or colander and drain the seeds from the bottom of the bowl.
- Finally you will have a sieve full of tasty seeds ready for you to eat with no mess. If you don’t eat them all straight away you can keep them in an airtight container in the fridge.
Inside each pomegranite there is hundreds of seeds encased in the membrane. You can eat these seeds raw or if that is not to your liking you can add them to your food. The best way I have found to eat the seeds is to add them into a natural yogurt. But there are other ways like adding them to a fruit salad or vegetable salad. The seeds will give your food some extra colour and taste.
